Muon acceleration with a very fast ramping synchrotron for a neutrino factory
نویسنده
چکیده
A 4600 Hz fast ramping synchrotron is explored as an economical way of accelerating muons from 4 to 20 GeV/c for a neutrino factory. Eddy current losses are minimized by the low machine duty cycle plus thin grain oriented silicon steel laminations and thin copper wires. Combined function magnets with high gradients alternating within single magnets form the lattice we describe. Muon survival is 83%. Submitted to: J. Phys. G

A Very Fast Ramping Muon Synchrotron for a Neutrino Factory
Historically synchrotrons have provided economical particle acceleration. Here we explore a very fast ramping muon synchrotron [1] for a neutrino factory [2]. The accelerated muons are stored in a racetrack to produce neutrino beams (μ− → e− νe νμ or μ → e νe νμ). Neutrino oscillations [3] have been observed at experiments [4] such as Homestake, Super–Kamiokande, SNO, and KamLAND. Further explo...

Muon acceleration is one of the more difficult stages to develop for a Neutrino Factory or Muon Collider. The large transverse and longitudinal admittances which must be designed into the system and the rapidity with which acceleration must take place because of muon decay preclude the use of conventional synchrotron design. The approach here employs fixed-field architectures for muon accelerat...
متن کاملBeam Dynamics of Muon Acceleration for Neutrino Factory
A conceptual design of a muon acceleration scheme based on recirculating superconducting linacs is proposed. In the presented scenario, acceleration starts after ionization cooling at 245 MeV/c and proceeds to 20 GeV, where the beam is injected into a neutrino factory storage ring. The key technical issues are addressed; such as: the choice of acceleration technology (superconducting versus nor...
متن کاملFfag Lattice for Muon Acceleration with Distributed Rf*
A future muon collider or neutrino factory requires fast acceleration to minimize muon decay. We have previously described an FFAG ring that accelerated muons from 10 to 20 GeV in energy. The ring achieved its large momentum acceptance using a low-emittance lattice with a small dispersion. In this paper, we present an update on that ring. We have used design tools that more accurately represent...

A Neutrino Factory, sending > 10 20 decay neutrinos per year from a high-energy stored muon beam towards remote detectors, has been suggested as the ultimate tool for precision measurement of the neutrino mixing matrix. Following two rounds of design studies that focused primarily on feasibility, the latest such study has begun the process of cost optimization. New ideas include muon 'phase rot...
